Don’t Panic When an Award Evolves – It Means We’re Doing Our Job

Every year, once an awards ceremony wraps and the winners are announced, we go back to work. We talk to our judges. We talk to our entrants. We look at where entries clustered, where they thinned out, and where the industry has quietly moved on since we last set the categories. That review shapes what happens next, and next year, that might mean a new category, an old one retired, a sector-specific split, or expansion into a new region.

So if you come back to enter an award you know well, and something looks different, don’t panic. It usually means we’ve been paying attention.

A programme that’s evolved for ten years

The UK Paid & Performance Media Awards is a good example of what that looks like in practice. It’s the tenth year we’ve run this programme, and in that time it’s had three names: the UK Biddable Media Awards, the UK Paid Media Awards, and now the UK Paid & Performance Media Awards.

Each name change tracked a real shift in the industry, not a rebrand for its own sake. The most recent one reflects something our judges and entrants have been telling us for a while: performance isn’t a subset of paid media anymore. ROI now shapes a campaign from the first pitch, not just the final report, and the best work in this space increasingly comes from brand-side teams and freelancers, not only agencies. The new categories and the wider entry criteria are a direct response to that.

It’s not just about categories

Categories tend to get the headline, but they’re not the only thing we look at. Every year we also review the entry process to make sure it still gives entrants a fair way to showcase their work, and the event itself, to make sure the night reflects the quality of the work being celebrated. Awards should be a good experience end to end, and that is our aim for everyone involved.

The bottom line

Awards should reflect an industry as it is, not as it was three years ago. When one of our programmes changes shape, it’s because the market changed first, and we did the work to catch up with it. That’s the standard we hold ourselves to across every Don’t Panic award.
